Liquid crystal/polymer composites (PDLCs) are light modulating materials prepared by polymerization-induced phase separation caused by photopolymerization of isotropic precursors consisting of liquid crystals, monomers and polymerization initiators. When the phase separation structure formed is smaller than the visible wavelength, such PDLC becomes a transparent material that exhibits the electro-birefringence effect. However, a strong electric field is required for the reorientation of the liquid crystal due to the anchoring effect of the interface with polymer. In this study, transparent PDLC using ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals exhibiting large dielectric constants were prepared and verified the enhancement of the electro-optical Kerr effect.
