The use of noncovalent interactions can lead to the development of new functions and improved performance. Novel liquid crystalline polymer-ion complexes were obtained by the proton-transfer reaction. Their thermal properties and orientation behavior were examined. The liquid crystalline polymer-ion complexes (BPEI-5Cm) were obtained by the complexation of a branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) and carboxylic acid compounds with a p-alkylazobenzene (5Cm, m: 0-8). BPEI-5Cm with m = 0-3 exhibited only a smectic A phase, while in the case of BPEI-5Cm of m ≥ 4, the smectic A, C and F phases were formed. LPEI-5Cm with m ≥ 4 obtained by the complexation of a linear polyethyleneimine (LPEI) and 5Cm showed smectic A and F phases.
