Abstract

A coaxial-optical setup for laser ultrasonic measurement using photorefractive liquid crystal mixtures was fabricated. Photorefractive liquid crystal mixtures, composed of smectic-C liquid crystals, photoconductive chiral compounds, and a sensitizer, are known to exhibit a fast photorefractive effect. The principle of the laser ultrasonic measurement is that a laser pulse is shot on an object to produce an ultrasonic vibration, and then a continuous laser beam is irradiated on the object to detect the vibration using photorefractive two-beam coupling. The method can be used to investigate the internal structure of an object without contact.
