In fabricating a liquid crystal (LC) cell with complex LC alignments using the photoalignment method, providing a pretilt angle is challenging. Notably, when the pretilt angle on the horizontal alignment side is zero in a hybrid aligned nematic (HAN) cell, there are two easy axes for LC directors. To fabricate a prototype of an LC Q-plate using a HAN cell with tunable retardation through applied voltage, we propose using the photoalignment method with a zero pretilt angle while controlling only the azimuthal direction. The directions of the easy axes are then determined under the influence of magnetic field lines from a permanent magnet.
