Ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules with an extended π-conjugated system and lactic acid moieties exhibit bulk photovoltaic effect in the ferroelectric chiral smectic phases. In the ferroelectric liquid crystals, fluoro groups are introduced on the aromatic cores in order to increase the polarizability. In this study, we synthesized a diphenylterthiophene derivative bearing fluoro groups at 3-position. The liquid crystal compound exhibited a smectic phase and the phase transition temperature was remarkably lowered. In a thin film state, fluorine-sulfur interaction induced a slight red-shift in the absorption spectrum. In addition, the bulk photovoltaic effect was also confirmed.
