Hydroxo[5, 10, 15, 20-tetrakis(4-n-dodecylphenyl)porphinato]aluminium(III) is found to exibit Dhd mesophase, whilst the another square planar metalloporphyrins analogues show only mesophases of lamellar type. It was indicated the axial OH group could significantly contribute to formation of stacking columns. But the phase transitions of the homologues revealed that the alkyl chains also take part in the mesomorphic behaviour as such that the heptyl derivative showed different phase sequence from that of the dodecyl and hexadecyl ones.
