The mechanism of liquid crystal molecule(5CB) alignment by the polarized UV irradiated photosensitive polymer has been studied by means of FT-IR and UV/vis spectroscopy. The crosslinking reaction of polyvinyl cynnamate(PVC) fairly depends on the temperature of substrate at the time of the polarized UV irradiation. According to the examination of the relation between the crosslinking of PVC and 5CB alignment, the 5CB aligns gradually due to the proceeding of the crosslinking reaction.
