Syntheses and Physical Properties of Liquid Crystals Containing Ferrocene (IX) : X-ray study of 1, 1'-bis[ω-[4-(4'-methoxyphenoxycarbonyl)phenoxy]alkoxycarbonyl]ferrocenes

Abstract

Disubstituted ferrocene derivatives, 1, 1'-bis[ω-[4-(4'-methoxyphenoxycarbonyl)phenoxy]alkoxycarbonyl]ferrocene (bMAF-n) (n: the number of carbon atoms in the methylene chain, n=2〜12) were synthesized in our laboratory. The liquid crystallinity of these compounds was investigated by thermal measurements and texture observations. In this study, X-ray diffraction experiment was carried out in order to determine the structures of liquid crystalline and crystalline phases. The result suggested that the molecule of bMAF-6 exists in an extended S geometry at both crystalline and liquid crystalline phases.
