Abstract
In order to study the steric effect around chiral carbon to liquid crystallinity of antiferroelectric liquid crystalline materials, we designed and synthesized liquid crystal compounds having a 2-pentylcyclopentyl ester group. The trans-2-pentylcyclopentyl ester type compound exhibited stable antiferroelectric chiral smectic C phase, whereas the cis-2-pentylcyclopentyl ester type compound exhibited unidentified smectic phase.
