An extremely sharp change in transmittance (98 % - 3 %) was induced in a temperature range of about 1K above the heat-induced SA-N* transition temperature for the (liquid crystalline polymer / liquid crystals / chiral dopant) ternary composite systems with the homeotropic alignment. In comparison with the conventional liquid crystals (LCs) systems, the composite systems exhibited a higher contrast and stable memory over a wide temperature region. The resulting scattering texture (memory) was retained in the SA phase due to fast quenching and then, was easily erased by the application of an a.c. electric field. Based on these characteristics, a novel composite system as information medium was realized with respect to a higher contrast and adequate durability.
