2021 Volume 89 Issue Announcements Pages S20-S35
This document is a manual that contains detailed information necessary for those who intend to submit manuscripts to Electrochemistry published by the Electrochemistry Society of Japan (ECSJ). It includes a submission guide, as well as guidelines, formats, and explanations related to the publication of Electrochemistry. Please note that this document conforms to the post-publication layout of the journal Electrochemistry in English; therefore, authors may consult this document as a layout reference.
Electrochemistry has been the official journal of the Electrochemical Society of Japan (ECSJ) since 1999. Electrochemistry succeeds the journal Denki Kagaku (電氣化學(1933-1961): The Japanese word for ‘Electrochemistry’),1 and Denki Kagaku oyobi Kogyo Butsuri Kagaku (電気化学および工業物理化学(1961-1998):2 Japanese translation of Electrochemistry and Industrial Physical Chemistry). The first volume of Denki Kagaku was published in 1933 with the aim of contributing to science and industry by publishing significant research in electrochemistry. Presently, Electrochemistry is published as a fully online open-access journal since 2018, when Electrochemistry was published independently after dividing the society bulletin “Denki Kagaku (電気化学)”.3 Electrochemistry is devoted to publishing content related to the following:
As the title of the predecessor journal Denki Kagaku oyobi Kogyo Butsuri Kagaku implies, the contents of manuscripts are not obligated to include phenomena directly related to electrochemistry. Nonetheless, as the main readership of this journal comprises researchers interested in electrochemistry, the contents of the work must include an explanation of how the study is associated with advancements in electrochemical science or technological progress in electrochemical engineering.
Manuscripts published in Electrochemistry are available as open access4 based on the copyright license agreement between the author(s) and ECSJ, wherein the author(s) retains the copyright of the manuscript. The PDF file of the final printed version may be posted on the author’s institutional repository,5 and may be accessed freely for secondary use. Authors and readers are equally entitled to the content of the manuscript, reprinting of figures and tables, and secondary use (including modifications) based on Creative Commons,6 thereby allowing the author(s) the opportunity to publish and disseminate the results of the research widely.
The ECSJ exclusively owns publication and related rights, as stated in the copyright license agreement. (See Section 4.1, Copyright Agreement).
Manuscripts published in Electrochemistry will be officially available online via J-STAGE,7 an electronic journal platform for science and technology information in Japan, operated by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
Electronic versions of all manuscripts will be assigned a document object identifier (DOI)8,9 from Crossref, a DOI Registration Agency,10–13 via JaLC (Japan Link Center).8The bibliographic contents of the manuscript will be registered in databases such as Web of Science,14 SCOPUS,15 and CiNii,16 allowing facile literature search.
The International Standard Serial Numbers (ISSN)17,18 for Electrochemistry are as follows:
Permanent preservation of the journal's articles is provided by Portico's dark archive via J-STAGE.19
In addition, the journal has been accepted to the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) for maintaining the editorial and publication reliability required for an open access journal.20
Authors submitting manuscripts to Electrochemistry are expected to comply with the ethical guidelines of ECSJ,21 regardless of whether they are members or non-members of ECSJ, and must comply with the ethical policy for the journal Electrochemistry22 as shown in Column 1. In the event of a failure to conform with the policy and/or relevant codes after submission and/or publication of a manuscript, ECSJ has the right to demand withdrawal of the manuscript before or after the peer review process. If a manuscript undergoes investigation by a third party or an investigation committee within the Society, the ECSJ will respond to the matter in good faith.
Authors submitting manuscripts for publication in Electrochemistry must comply with the following rules and take full responsibility.
Authors are required to disclose any conflicts of interest (COI) when submitting manuscripts to Electrochemistry. This is because, in the current era of widespread collaborative and contract research, improving the legitimacy and transparency of research is the best way to gain public trust for academic publication. For this purpose, at the time of manuscript submission, the authors are obliged to explain any facts that may cause bias against the research they have conducted with respect to any financial or non-financial relationships, such as the source of research grants, contributions, gratuities, provision of materials and equipment, licenses, etc., and employment, organizational and personal professional relationships. If there is no conflict of interest, the author is still obligated to declare this fact in the additional submission information at the time of submission.
Matters considered to be related to conflicts of interest is increasing recently, and the relationships within stakeholders are becoming more and more complex. However, please be aware that ethical problems may arise regardless of whether the author is aware of the conflict or not, if a conflict of interest is not disclosed prior to submission and is discovered after the paper is published. Authors must understand that conflicts of interest can often occur and that disclosure of conflicts of interest is essential for readers to be confident in the experimental facts and to understand the content of the manuscript.
It would be beyond the scope of the instructions for authors to give examples of conflicts of interest. It is recommended to check the website of the dissertation review company for a detailed explanation.
The authors retain the copyright of their published manuscript in Electrochemistry, including the Advanced Online Publication version, which follows the policy of open access journal. Under the copyright policy, readers and users of the published materials can share and adapt based on the type of Creative Commons License indicated by the author. Each section below indicates the details.
4.1 Copyright agreementAll manuscripts accepted in Electrochemistry, including the Advanced Online Publication version, are open access, and the author(s) retain the copyright in the article. Details regarding the exercise of copyright of articles published in Electrochemistry are specified in Column 2 “Copyright Agreement with ECSJ for articles published in Electrochemistry” for each of the following items.
Author(s) must agree with the Copyright Agreement when submitting their manuscript by checking the check box in the submission system during the online submission process barring which Electrochemistry will not receive the submission. The Copyright Agreement comes into effect when the manuscript is accepted for publication; thus, if the manuscript is not accepted for publication or if the manuscript is withdrawn by the author(s) during the peer reviewing process, the Copyright Agreement is automatically nullified.
1. Copyright and Reuse policy
This agreement specifies that the author(s) of a manuscript published in Electrochemistry shall grant The Electrochemical Society of Japan (ECSJ) the exclusive copyright license regarding full content of the manuscript, and a non-exclusive license of all copyright interests regarding the Supporting Information. By filling in the checkbox in the online submission of the manuscript, the author of the manuscript shall acknowledge and agree to the following terms and conditions concerning the grant of the copyright license in the manuscript and its supporting information, including the published version in any format.
The basic policy for copyright and reuse of papers submitted to Electrochemistry is as follows:
If the manuscript is not accepted for publication or withdrawn during peer review, the license and the following terms and conditions will be nullified.
CC BY 4.0 (Attribution 4.0 International)
CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International)
2. Matters Licensed by the Author to ECSJ and Publishers
In addition to the matters specified in CC, the authors grant the following matters to the ECSJ and the publisher.
3. Copyright Compliance
The author must obey the ECSJ provisions on copyright.
4. Permission to Reuse
The authors and others who have obtained access to the manuscript by a legitimate method are permitted to reuse the material under the CC license. Thus, the origin of the content must be properly cited. Permission must be obtained directly from the author for the following items:
5. Disclaimer regarding license procedure for permission to use
Under no circumstances will the ECSJ act on behalf of the authors for procedures involving license reuse that the author should perform.
6. Revision of Agreement
The above agreement is subject to change by the ECSJ without notice. Manuscripts submitted before the revision of this agreement will not be applied retroactively without the consent of the author.
7. Governing Law/Jurisdiction
This Copyright License Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with Japanese laws and regulations. Disputes arising in connection with this Agreement are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Tokyo District Court as the court of the first instance.
Authors who submit their manuscript have the choice of publication under the terms of either Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) or a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) as defined by Creative Common.6,23 The authors must choose either license at the time of submission. A CC banner will be shown in the published manuscript to indicate the type of license. Please choose the type of CC carefully, as changes to the license are not permitted once the manuscript is accepted. The CC BY 4.0 license grants users the right to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format for sharing, and remix, transform, and build upon the material, and for any purpose, even commercially for adapting, as long as the users give appropriate credit. The CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license allows users the right to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format for sharing, and remix, transform, and build upon the material for only non-commercial purpose for adapting, as long as the users give appropriate credit and distribute their contributions under the same license as the original.
Please refer to Column 3 for more information and the CC web page for frequently asked questions (FAQ) regarding CC licenses.24
Please note that the Creative Commons License mean how the author grant permission for secondary use to other users and it does not indicate or limit the rights of the author described in the “Copyright License Agreement with the Electrochemical Society of Japan.”

Notice: The ECSJ does not make any judgment regarding commercial or non-commercial use in the reuse of articles declared under this license. As the ECSJ does not accept authority regarding copyright processing, the authors may be contacted by a potential reuser. In the future, if the user cannot get in contact with the author, the license will be limited to non-commercial use until a certain number of years have passed and the copyright will become invalid.
Why Electrochemistry does not apply ND (No Derivatives) ?
The ND category in a CC license does not permit adaptations of the work.
Partial reuse of previously reported data (for example, a graph), generating a graph that compares data together with the users’ own data, quoting sentences or figures, would be regarded as a copyright remix, modification, or building upon the material. Therefore, the reuser must obtain permission from the author for an article with an ND license.
The Editorial Board recognizes that intellectual property rights should be protected. However, as such reuse is commonly found, the Editorial Board believes that an ND license that requires permission for any type of modification from the author is unrealistic. An article published in Electrochemistry should contribute widely to scientific development. As the policy of Open Access also recommends avoiding ND as much as possible, Electrochemistry limits licensing to CC BY-NC-SA, and the usage of ND is postponed for now. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Electrochemistry is devoted to the publication of research in the fields of electrochemistry and applied physical chemistry. The journal Electrochemistry solicits the submission of manuscripts of the following seven types as shown in Article 1 of the Paper Submission Policy.25 The following types of papers in English may be submitted. In addition to the above, the editorial board of Electrochemistry may publish “Editorial” articles to announce information about the journal in accordance with the editorial policy.
5.1 ArticleAn Article describes results or conclusions based on scientific facts that have significant novelty and originality. This is the most common classification for manuscripts submitted for Electrochemistry. The typical structure of an Article consists of an abstract, followed by the main contents of the manuscript. The main contents will typically consist of Introduction, Experimental, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion sections. The submission of an Abstract Graphic, which is a conceptual description of the major insight of the article, is highly recommended. There is no page limitation for an Article, but it is recommended that Articles are written in a concise manner so that the reader can easily understand the main findings of the study. Supporting Information (SI) or J-STAGE Data can be used for that purpose.
5.2 CommunicationCommunications are limited to manuscripts that require urgent publication. In addition to the need for urgency, a Communication should comprise of significant new facts, valuable data, and methods with novelty and originality. A Communication should describe impactful research wherein dissemination prior to a full study will substantially benefit the advancement of electrochemistry and applied physical chemistry. The typical structure of a Communication will consist of an abstract, followed by the main contents of the manuscript. The main content does not have to be separated into sections such as the Introduction, Experimental, Results and Discussion, and Conclusion sections. The submission of an Abstract Graphic, which is a conceptual description of the major insight of Communication, is highly recommended.
There is no page limitation for Communications; however, text, figures, and tables should be restricted to the main findings of the study, and authors should concisely describe the high impact of the research and specify why rapid publication is desirable for the field. The use of Supporting Information (SI) or J-STAGE Data is encouraged to include details of experimental data or supplementary material provided the material is pertinent to and supports the work to which it relates, but is not essential for comprehension of the main body of the work.
5.3 NoteNotes illustrate invaluable new data, methods, etc. based on empirical facts, and include content that leads to progress in scientific understanding or technological advancement. As long as these criteria are fulfilled, a Note does not necessarily have to demonstrate a clear logical discussion of the corresponding results. There are no page limitations for a Note. The composition of a Note should follow that of an Article or Communication, but does not have to rigidly follow the same rules. The rationality of the experimental methodology and validity of the results is considered imperative for a Note. The submission of an Abstract Graphic, which is a conceptual description of the major insight of the Note, is highly recommended.
5.4 Comprehensive paperA Comprehensive paper reports new insights or draws new conclusions from the treatment of previously reported data, mainly from the authors’ previous studies. A Comprehensive paper is generally written upon invitation from the Editorial Board or a Branch/Committee of ECSJ, or as commemorative award articles, but papers without invitation are also welcome. There are no page limitations for a Comprehensive paper. As Comprehensive papers may contain reproduced material such as figures and schematics from past publications, it is the authors’ responsibility to obtain the relevant rights for permission to use such materials. Comprehensive papers submitted on invitations are eligible for a reduction in the article processing charge (APC).
5.5 ReviewA Review presents research trends in a certain field from the perspective of the current situation and discusses future prospects based on an extensive literature review. The submission of Reviews requires the recommendation of the Editorial Board or the Branch/Committee of ECSJ. There are no page limitations for a Review. As a Review may contain reproduced material such as figures and schematics from past publications, it is the authors’ responsibility to obtain the relevant rights for permission to use such materials. Reviews submitted upon invitation are eligible for the reduction in the article processing charge (APC).
5.6 HeadlineA Headline is an invited paper compiled by leading researchers in a specific field related to topics handled in the ‘special topics’ volume planned by the Editorial Board. There is no page limitation for a Headline. As a Headline may contain reproduced materials such as figures and schematics from past publications, it is the authors’ responsibility to obtain the relevant rights for permission to use such materials. Headlines are eligible for a reduction in the article processing charge (APC).
5.7 CorrectionCorrections are published when corrections or changes are required for papers published in Electrochemistry at the request of the author or by the Editorial Board. Corrections are published if the error seriously affects the content of the published manuscript, for example, it affects the scientific accuracy of published information, or the reputation of the authors or the journal, based on discussion between the authors and the editorial board of Electrochemistry. Corrections that do not affect the contribution in a material way or substantially hinder the understanding of the reader will not be published (e.g., typos, spelling or grammatical errors). If a revision is required for these reasons, it will be treated as an additional revision after the author's proofreading. (See 13.2 Proof-reading time frame) Corrections are classified as errata, corrigenda, or addenda. Please contact the Editorial Board when publication of a Correction is necessary.
5.7.1 ErrataErrata concern the correction of mistakes or errors introduced by the journal in the editing or production process, including errors of omission, such as failure to make factual proof corrections requested by authors within the deadline provided by the journal and within journal policy. The article processing charge (APC) is waived for Errata.
5.7.2 CorrigendaCorrigenda are published when corrections or changes are required for papers published in Electrochemistry at the request of the author, and if the scientific accuracy or reproducibility of the original manuscript is compromised. The article processing charge (APC) is applicable to Corrigenda and must be paid by the authors.
5.7.3 AddendaAddenda may be published if it contains significant additional information for the interpretation of the original published manuscript. An Addendum should not contradict the original publication, but if significant information available to the authors at the time of submission of the original manuscript was unintentionally omitted, this material will be published as an Addendum after assessment by the editor. The article processing charge (APC) will be applicable and must be paid by the author if the publication is permitted.
Please read the following notes regarding manuscript formatting carefully to minimize editing complications and expedite the editing process. Manuscripts that deviate significantly from the instructions described in this section may not be approved as a submission and will be returned to the author(s) without review.
6.1 What to prepareThe following items are necessary for submission to Electrochemistry.
The cover letter should clearly state the reasons for submitting the manuscript to Electrochemistry and include any essential information that the author(s) wish to inform the Editorial Board.
A letter of recommendation from the chair of the Committee should accompany the submission of a Review article with recommendations from the Branch/Committee of ECSJ.
Download the author checklist provided in the URL below. Check all the points listed and submit the checklist along with the manuscript. Please ensure that the manuscript follows the formatting styles recommended by the journal. The checklist compiles formatting notes, layout styles, notations, etc., which are often overlooked.
Please prepare a list of responses or rebuttal to each question raised by the reviewers. A separate file should be prepared for each reviewer. The revised manuscript, including the supporting information, must reflect the content of the responses to the reviewer.
An abstract graphic is a visual summary of the main findings of the article.
For invited papers, a profile for all the authors is necessary. Please refer to the example file provided in the following URL.
The manuscript file typically consists of the following contents in a single document.
Please submit the following two editions of the revised manuscript to be submitted after being reviewed and peer-reviewed.
Supplementary material (Supporting Information or J-STAGE Data) is intended for publication in online editions and should be submitted as separate files. Supporting information should assist in a deeper understanding of the experimental methods and analytical techniques or provide supplemental data that would assist in further understanding of the main results.
Supplementary material intended to aid reviewers in the evaluation of the manuscript (not intended to be published online) should be submitted as a separate file.
The manuscript must be typewritten with double-spacing on A4 (or letter) size paper using 12 point Times and Symbol fonts with ample margins. Page numbers should be assigned to each page. Roman-type (Times New Roman, etc.) font is suggested.
6.2.1 Submission in LaTeX formatIn case of the submission of manuscripts in LaTeX format, please follow the instructions below.
The manuscript should be submitted as a .dvi file, which is a compiled LaTeX file.
However, since the .dvi file alone cannot be used for publication process, all files which is necessary to compile such as;
If the author(s) encounter layout errors or problems with PDF file generation when uploading a manuscript in Editorial Manager, please check the style file and attach it to the manuscript to check again. If the PDF file is still not generated correctly, please attach a PDF file that is correctly displayed with the layout intended by the author as “Other files” since there are various possible causes such as the operating environment (OS and version), tools used, and LaTeX creation method. In addition, figures and tables should be attached to the LaTeX file as long as they do not cause any problems, but can be uploaded as independent files as “Other files” just to be understood.
6.3 Length of manuscriptsThere are no page limitations for manuscripts. For the merit of readers, authors are suggested to make use of the supporting materials and refrain from excessive redundancy. A Communication would typically be 3 pages long. Authors can make a rough estimate of the number of pages with Equation 1.:
\begin{equation} p = (w/7 + l + 50)/120 \end{equation} | (1) |
The front page should consist of the title of the article, followed by the complete names of the authors with memberships of ECSJ, and the institutional affiliation(s) where the work was conducted, including the complete address(es) and Open Research & Contributor ID (ORCID) as shown in Column 4.
The complete names of the authors should be written in the order of first name, middle name, or initial, and SURNAME, with an asterisk indicating the corresponding author. The surname (family name) should be CAPITALIZED. Use ‘and’ before the last author in case of multiple authors. Corresponding author should be marked with an asterisk (*).

The main body of the manuscript is typically provided in the following order: 1. Introduction, 2. Experimental, 3. Results and discussion, 4. Conclusion(s): Depending on the structure of the manuscript, such as for a Communication, these structures may be reorganized. Appendix(-ces), Symbols, Abbreviations, Acknowledgment(s) and References etc. should follow the Conclusion.
The inclusion of appendices is generally discouraged and should only be used when specific equations or results need to be derived and when there is a compelling reason for not including that information in the Supporting Information.
6.8 Reference formatWhen describing the reference and note numbers in the text, indicate them in the appropriate places with the serial numbers of the Arabic superscript characters, such as 1 or 2, 3, 4-6. The numbers should follow punctuation marks when applied.
An example of a reference section is presented in Column 6. Journal abbreviation should follow ISO 4 standards27 using databases such as Web of Science28 or Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI).29 Do not use ibid when referring to the same journal. Usage of etc. for a reference with a long list of authors is not recommended. In the case that the authors choose to do so, the authors are advised to comply with the recommendation of the US National Library of Medicine (NLM) by listing the first six authors and using et al. for the following authors.30 The NLM presently recommends to list all authors and avoid omitting authors.
Please use the below abbreviations when citing the predecessor journals of Electrochemistry.
From 1958 to 1969, the ECSJ also published an all-English Journal, Journal of The Electrochemical Society of Japan (Overseas Edition), along with J. Electrochem. Soc. Jpn. and Denki Kagaku (presently Electrochemistry).
J. Electrochem. Soc. Jpn.(Overseas Ed.)32
Since 2018, in addition to the journal Electrochemistry, ECSJ has published a Japanese journal Denki Kagaku3 for members (also available for non-members by pay-for-view).
Figures should be placed at the end of the manuscript after the main body of manuscript and reference list, with one figure on each page. Please make sure that the order of figures and the captions are in accordance with the list of figures.
6.9.1 Figure captionsThe description of the figure should be presented as a summary list before the figure. The description of the figure should not only complement the description in the text or only include headings, but should be such that the reader can understand the content of the figure just by reading this description. Please note that if multiple plots, lines, or figures are listed, the differences in experimental conditions should be clearly indicated for each so that the differences are clear.
6.9.2 DrawingColor may be used for drawing. Use one page for each figure, 86-mm wide for a one-column format and 178-mm wide for a two-column format. Use a resolution of 600 dpi or higher, and font size larger than 9 points. Line widths for drawings should be at least 0.5 points (0.18 mm). Figures should be numbered in sequence (Figure 1, Figure 2… or Scheme 1, Scheme 2…). The figure caption or the author’s name should be given below the figure. Digital photographs and micrographs should be treated as figures. Scale bars should accompany micrographs with adequate line width and font size.
6.10 Table formatTables should be placed at the end of the manuscript after the list of figure captions. Text for tables should be in black and the use of color should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Use one page for each table, 86-mm wide for a one-column table and 178-mm wide for a two-column table. Tables should be numbered in sequence (Table 1, Table 2…). The title of the Table should appear on the 1st line at the top of the Table.
6.11 Supplementary material (optional)Authors who wish to provide supplementary material to further deepen the understanding of the experimental and analytical methods and the results presented in the paper may submit the file as supporting material separately from the main text. The documents in the appendix will be registered in the J-STAGE Data, which is designated as a data repository of Electrochemistry. The authors may choose and use either Supporting Information(SI), which is subordinate to the content of the article and includes text and figures, or independent file(s), such as raw data, high-resolution figures and movies.
Supporting Information in published papers is indicated in the DOI field on the front page, in the Data Availability Statement (see 7.1(2)), and in the References. This additional desicriptions are handled by the editorial office.
6.11.1 Supporting InformationSupporting Information (SI) typically is a subordinate file to the main contents and includes document or information such as large tables or data sets, additional figures, supplementary photo- and micrographs, movie files, audio clips,33 to assist in a deeper understanding of the experimental methods and analytical techniques or provide supplemental data that would assist in further understanding of the main results. Since the supplementary materials will be published using the J-STAGE Data platform, they should be submitted as a separate file from the manuscript body online at the same time.
The SI should preferably be provided as a single PDF file with a maximum file size of 5 GB.34
The data can be loaded onto the data repository “J-STAGE Data” released by JST. The URL for J-STAGE Data of Electrochemistry is:
Unlike Supporting Information, J-STAGE data has an independent DOI (URL) and can be used not only as supplementary data for articles, but also for citation, sharing, secondary use, etc. under the conditions specified by the copyright holder, independent of the citation of the article under the following item type. Therefore, it is more effective to submit the data to J-STAGE Data, if the data presented in the paper is expected to be used separately, or if the authors are providing raw data to further improve the reliability of the experimental results, or submitting presentation materials/videos to facilitate understandingIf authors are sending data, they must submit the metadata for registration.
Please fill out the form of metadata for registration (Excel file format) at
and upload it using the data files. The instructions for the metadata file are provided in an Excel file. Although J-STAGE data has a specification wherein authors can register files by themselves, authors are requested to upload files through the Editorial Manager in order to register files as an integral part of the review and peer-review process in Electrochemistry. However, if certain files cannot be uploaded through the Editorial Manager, such as executable files (exe), please contact the editorial office. The Supporting Information (SI) may also be uploaded to J-STAGE Data and may consist of multiple files, including the document file and other files. Therefore, including an descriptions of the all files on J-STAGE Data in the document file (SI) will be recommended.
6.12 MiscellaneousAuthors are suggested to refer to most recently published papers in Electrochemistry (papers published after Vol. 90 No.10, issued in October 2022).35

The submission of manuscripts to Electrochemistry is operated by the Aries Editorial Manager.41 Authors may submit their manuscript via the online submission system in the following URL:
Information on the submission system may be found on the above website. The reliability of OA papers is improved not only by efforts of journal editorial board and publishers, but also by increasing authors’ awareness of research ethics. For Electrochemistry, authors are required to enter regarding adherence to ethical guidelines for submission of the manuscript and the roles of each author based on Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT),43 which will be appended to the end of the paper after it is accepted.
CRediT is required for all authors to clearly indicate their authorship. The information entered in Editorial Manager at the time of submission will be transcribed. Since the description of these items will be formatted by Editorial office, it is not necessary to include them in the manuscript.
The data availability statement (DAS) is described for the secondary use of the data presented in the paper by the readers of the paper, and how to handle them.44,45 It is not mandatory to provide all raw data with a manuscript submitting to Electrochemistry, but it is recommended to do so not only for the convenience of readers but also to ensure the reliability of the paper data. These data will be published on J-STAGE Data (on Figshare platform), and the data information will be listed as DAS. Even if the data is not provided, it is recommended that describe how to contact to the data or their authors if it is described elsewhere.
Authors are required to disclose any conflicts of interest (COI) when submitting manuscripts to Electrochemistry. The authors are obliged to explain any facts that may cause bias against the research they have conducted with respect to any financial or non-financial relationships. If there is no conflict of interest, the author is still obligated to declare this fact at the time of submission. You will be asked whether or not you have provided as one of “Additional information” in the Editorial Manager at the time of submission.
Funding information entered as the one of the “Manuscript Data” in Editorial Manager at the time of submission will be transcribed in this section. It used to be written in Acknowledgements which is no longer required there. Since the description of these items will be formatted by Editorial office, it is not necessary to include them in the manuscript.
Manuscripts submitted to Electrochemistry will be screened using Crossref Similarity Check V246 powered by iThenticate v2.047 and produced by Turnitin for similarity to published materials.
The submission of manuscripts to Electrochemistry is free of charge. However, authors must pay an article processing charge (see Section 11) for publication of manuscripts that have been accepted for publication after the peer reviewing process.
Authors should refer to the guidelines for the peer review process (Column 7), which describes the basic peer review policy.
The review process is based on Single-Blind Peer Review,48 where the authors are not given the identity of the reviewers.
An associate editor will be appointed to a submitted manuscript by the Editor-in-Chief or one of the Deputy Editors-in-Chief. More than two reviewers will be appointed by an associate editor. The authors may suggest potential reviewers and may also give the names of individuals whom the authors wish not to be appointed reviewers.49
While the identity of the reviewers will not be disclosed to the authors, the names and affiliations of the authors will be revealed to the reviewers. Reviewers will be acknowledged as a ‘list of reviewers’ on a regular basis in the journal or journal website.
It is the policy of Electrochemistry that the associate editor in charge will not be revealed to the authors. This policy was implemented to ensure that the review process is not influenced in any way by the individual managing the manuscript. If a member of the Editorial Board is one of the authors of a submitted manuscript, measures are taken so that the editorial member is indiscernible so as not to interfere with the peer review process and ensure equality of the peer review.
In order to ensure that the acceptance of submitted manuscripts is based solely on their academic value and concordance with the journal’s aims and objectives, the representative directors and executive directors in charge of editing of Electrochemistry cannot serve as manuscript managers or reviewers, nor are they involved in decision-making processes such as peer review or manuscript acceptance, as stipulated in Article 2.6 of Paper Submission Policy for Electrochemistry.
10.3 Standard number of days for peer review and notification of acceptanceElectrochemistry values the fast reviewing and publication of manuscripts. The standard number of days required for the peer-review process and the period for revising the manuscript based on the reviewer comments varies according to the manuscript type and the degree of revision necessary (Column 8). Reviewers are requested to review manuscripts according to these standards. While these numbers are not strictly enforced, Electrochemistry has set these standards to aid reviewers in expediting the reviewing process. The standard number of days is set in a restrained manner so as not to cause excessive urgency to reviewers or reviewers or to degrade the quality of the review process. A “Certificate of Acceptance” (Column 9) will be promptly issued through the manuscript submission system for papers that have been accepted for publication based on the reviewing process.
ECSJ retains exclusive publication rights to the accepted manuscript after sending Certification of Acceptance, as described in 1(3) in Column 2, “Copyright Agreement with the Electrochemical Society of Japan for articles published in Electrochemistry”. In order to preserve this right, the manuscript and related materials shall be embargoed until the advanced online publication of the manuscript, and the contents of the manuscript may not be notified or disclosed to any third parties. The author(s) can prove the fact that the manuscript has been accepted by a certificate of acceptance from then on. In the unlikely event that an author intentionally withdraws the manuscript and submits it in whole, in part, or with alterations, to another journal, ECSJ reserves the right to publicly declare the fact of double submission and to claim that it has the exclusive right to publish the corresponding article.

Notes | * Minor and major revisions are not determined by the time necessary for revisions but on the significance of the revisions necessary. In general, problems that must be addressed (i.e. additional experiments) to make the paper publishable will be denoted as a major revision. Minor revision recommendation, on the other hand, would imply that the manuscript is close to publishment, and the authors are suggested to respond to issues that would enhance the readability and quality of the manuscript (normally without the need for additional experiments). * An extension in the reviewing or revising process when more days than the standard number of days are necessary may be granted on request of the reviewer or author. |
<<Notice>> APC Payment and Advanced Online Publications
The Editorial Board is pleased to announce that the manuscript submitted by the author(s) as described above has been accepted and that ECSJ has retained the exclusive publication rights for the content of the accepted manuscript. The author(s) will be embargoed on the manuscript and related materials until the early publication date, during which time the author(s) will be prohibited from notifying or publishing the manuscript to third parties. Authors can use this certificate to prove that their manuscript has been accepted for publication. In the event that an author intentionally withdraws this manuscript and submits it in whole, in part, or with alterations to another journal, ECSJ reserves the right to publicly declare the fact of double submission and to claim that it has the exclusive right to publish the corresponding article.
After sending Certificate of Acceptance, the secretariat office of The Electrochemical Society of Japan will immediately start the procedure for requesting the article processing charge (APC) excepting the case of the APC waiver. A few days later, the Secretariat will send you an email with a credit card payment or a bank account invoice by Commerce Manager. Especially, in the case that all authors are non-members, Advanced Online Publication and typesetting processes for the accepted manuscript will be carried out after payment is confirmed. Please cooperate with prompt payment. If payment will be delayed, please contact the secretariat <ad.apc-e@electrochem.jp> with the reason for delaying as soon as possible. Your contact can be accepted in either English or Japanese.
Electrochemistry is an open-access journal where the authors bear the costs of producing an accepted manuscript. Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, an article processing charge (APC) will be assessed and an invoice will be issued to the authors. The standard APC is 150000 JPY (VAT included). The APC reflects the costs associated with peer review, editing and typesetting processes. The APC claim of ECSJ takes effect at the acceptance of manuscript.
11.2 Reduction and waiver of APCAPC for manuscripts authored or co-authored by ECSJ member(s) will be automatically reduced to 1/3 (50000 JPY). The other APC reductions and exemptions are applied to the following cases as tabulated in Column 10.
Categories | APC / JPY |
Reduction (%) | |
---|---|---|---|
Standard | 150,000 | ||
Reduction | Category A | 75,000 | 50.0 |

Category C | 20,000 | 86.7 | |
Exemption | Category D | 0 | 100 |
(10% VAT included)
* No offprints will be printed.
* Amount of APC does not depend on a number of page.
Category A: Authors from developing countries as defined by ECSJ
Category B: Manuscripts (co-)authored by members of the ECSJ. Manuscripts published in special issue papers planned by the ECSJ. Request form not necessary (discount automatically applied)
Category C: ECSJ members or authors from developing countries with special recommendations from the Editor-in-Chief.
Category D: Manuscript on invitation from the ECSJ Authors from developing countries, as defined by the United Nations.50,51
APC for Corrections (see Section 5.7) due to the author’s liability (Corrigenda and Addenda) is 10,000 JPY (10% VAT included) regardless of category.
Note: A handling fee of 5,000 JPY (10% VAT included) must be paid if a new minor error is found after the author’s proofreading and before the final manuscript is published, and the author reports the additional correction. (Please refer to 13.2 "Deadline for author's proofreading".)
The APC can be paid by the author’s institution, funding source, or author. After a certificate of acceptance is issued, unless the authors are notified of a waiver, the payment process for APC will begin without delay. Authors will receive an invoice for credit card payments or bank transfers through the Commerce Manager, a companion solution for the Editorial Manager that enables the processing of fees.
The author who submitted the manuscript will receive an invoice e-mail which can be treated as a genuine copy such as that shown in Column 11 from the Secretariat of ECSJ, showing a link to the Editorial Manager. The text of e-mail sent from the Secretariat of ECSJ shall be the original invoice. We do not issue or send invoices in any other form, such as printed forms or PDF files. In addition, since this invoice is for services related to the publication of the paper, no delivery note or quotation will be issued.
Generally, payment will be made by credit card (PayPal). In the case of credit card payment, following the URL provided in the e-mail, you will be able to access a printable Commerce Manager invoice (Column 12). Please follow the instructions on the screen to pay by credit card or contact the secretariat to inform them of your intention to pay by bank transfer. After completion of payment, you can print out an invoice confirming that the fee has been paid (Paid) from the link provided. Please use this as your receipt.
If you wish to make a bank transfer, please inform the ECSJ secretariat (ed.apc-e@electrochem.jp) by e-mail and transfer the money to the bank account indicated on the invoice, including the case where you transfer the money from an account other than that of your organization or yourself.
It is therefore essential that the authors complete the APC payment as soon as possible for rapid processing of the accepted manuscript. If it is difficult to complete the payment procedure immediately, please contact the editorial office (ad.apc-e@electrochemistry.jp) explaining the reason for requesting a postponement.
Please download the reduction/exemption in APC form from the below link.
The author(s) need to apply no later than the Advanced Online Production.
Notice: Please note that whether PayPal can authenticate your credit card payment depends on the credit information provided to PayPal, so it may take some time for the payment to be confirmed. In some cases, it may take several days, so please be patient. As of November 2020, it has been confirmed that authors who specify a contact email address with a “qq.com” domain are not payable by PayPal, so please note that the invoice will be sent directly.
<<Notice>> Payment instructions
Thank you for submitting your manuscript to Electrochemistry. The journal requires the payment of an article processing charge (APC) before your manuscript is sent for the publication process. Confirmation of billing and receipt status and output (printing) of balance proof are possible after the transition to the Commerce Manager. Please note that the completion of payments via Paypal may take several days depending on the type of credit card used and credit information. In most cases, this process will be completed without issues; however, if the payment is not completed within a week please contact the editorial office of ECSJ <ed.apc-e@electrochem.jp>.

APCs for manuscripts to be published in Electrochemistry may be paid by the affiliation to which the author belongs on behalf of the author(s). Please refer to the following FAQ for answers to general inquiries about payment procedures.
Since Electrochemistry accepts submissions from both domestic and foreign authors, ECSJ standardizes the administrative procedures for accepted papers. Therefore, the paper submission procedure is based on e-mail, as is the case with many foreign journals. APC is not only for the electronic information of the published article, but also includes services related to the review and publication procedures leading to the publication of the article, and the publication of the article is assured when the Certificate of Acceptance is issued. The article processing charge (APC) for manuscripts published in Electrochemistry is charged before the manuscript is published. As no offprint of the accepted manuscript is issued, the payment will be treated as a service fee without the delivery of goods. Therefore, a quotation and a statement on delivery will not be issued. A Certificate of Acceptance with the manuscript submission number and the name of the main author will be issued upon acceptance of the manuscript. Please use this as a certificate of service receipt.
As described in Column 10, APC and any charges are fixed in principle. Please refer to this page to confirm the billing amount.
If confirmation of the content of the publication is required as acceptance inspection, the electronic file (PDF) of the paper published on J-STAGE may be used. We do not issue reprints or send printed materials. Upon acceptance, the applicant must certify that both the early release file and the final version file are published files.
In the unlikely case that your institute or imbursement source requests additional documents, please contact the editorial office (ed.apc-e@electrochem.jp) so that we can confirm the contents of the necessary documents. In such a case, please have the person in charge of accounting who handles the administrative procedures contacting the editorial office, not the author.
The processes of advanced online publication and proofreading of your manuscript will begin after confirming that you have paid the APC. We strongly recommend you to pay APC by credit card as soon as possible. If you make a bank transfer via the organization to which the authors belong, confirmation of receipt of APC may be substantially setback, and also the publication process may be delayed significantly. If the author wishes for their manuscript to be published sooner, please send a copy of the payment slip or immediately send a proof of your intent to pay of the organization to which the authors belong. If it can be confirmed, the manuscript will be sent to the publisher. Please let us know at least your willingness to pay and your definite schedule. By convention, the editorial board has the authority to forcibly withdraw the publication of your accepted manuscript, if you do not contact us within two weeks after acceptance.
Electrochemistry offers the early publication of just accepted papers, such as Advanced Online Publication (AOP). Early publication of accepted manuscripts will be carried out in the following order before the official publication.
Manuscripts accepted for publication after the peer-reviewing process are immediately sent to the publisher. The authors will receive an APC simultaneously. The accepted author’s manuscript will be published on J-STAGE as an AOP three business days after being sent to the publisher. DOI will be assigned to the manuscript at this stage. Since the accepted author’s version has not been proofread yet, a notice will be stated on the title page that the AOP may contain minor unedited text and parts that may need minor corrections.
The ‘uncorrected proof version’ will be released on J-STAGE approximately two weeks after it is accepted. The publisher will notify the authors of the web release of the uncorrected proof. The authors will receive the uncorrected proof and begin the proofreading process. Author proofreading (see Chapter 13) will be performed using this uncorrected proof version.
After the author's proofreading is completed and the author submits the proof, the layout is finalized and the article ID and the pages are fixed immediately. The final version of the paper will be published after the completion of the publication operations. The issued date of the paper will be fixed on the day the final version is released. The authors should carefully check for any unprocessed errors in the corrected version of the proof.
The authors are responsible for returning the proofreading results by the specified deadline. If the authors do not return the proofreading results by the deadline, the non-proofread version will be published as the official final publication. In this case, please note that if you need to make corrections after the official version is published, you will need to resubmit the revised manuscript as Correction.
Author proofreading is a publishing process for correcting errors that occur when the submitted manuscript is converted into a published version of the manuscript. Revisions should not involve changing the content of the manuscript. Therefore, revising the contents of the abstract, keywords, main text, as well as changes to the author's affiliation, supporting information, abstract graphic, etc., are not accepted except for printing errors and obvious grammatical mistakes. If the authors register their data on J-STAGE Data, the publisher requests the checking of the data during the author proofreading.
Manuscripts that require major corrections will have to be re-evaluated; in some cases, they must be peer reviewed again (accepted manuscript will be declined). Changes to the title of the manuscript, addition/deletion of authors, and changes in the order of authors will be taken as serious revisions, and acceptance of the manuscript will be declined and must be re-evaluated.
Please refer to the “Notes for Author Proof-reading” (Column 13) which is distributed to authors at the time of proofreading, for details on author proofreading.
Purpose of Author Proof-reading
Content of author proofreading
Check the citation order, ensure that all references are in numerical order and correspond with the references on the list.
Check the spelling of all the authors. Use “and” in front of the last author. The typical style for a citation will be Author1, Author2, and Author3, journal title, volume, and starting page (year). If the citation is correct, the journal name, volume, and year are printed in blue with a direct link. Otherwise, the text is printed in black with no link and should be revised, if necessary.
Correction to the final published version after proofreading and publication
If any corrections attributable to the author(s) occur in the article or Supporting Information that has been published, including early publication, after proofreading, and if the Editorial Board determines that a correction is necessary or the author(s) wish to make a correction, the correction will be made by an “Additional revision” or an independent article “Correction” after approval by the Editorial Board of Electrochemistry. In case of “Correction”, a new manuscript must be submitted from Editorial Manager. These revisions will be subject to the handling fee or publication fee as specified in Column 10 in accordance with Article 4 of the Paper Submission Policy. Please note that if the contents of corrections are judged to have serious ethical issues, the paper may be withdrawn or retracted instead of being corrected.
Author proofreading should be returned within 72 hours (three business days), and at the latest by the targeted deadline of the issue to be published as specified in Column 14. A proofreading check-sheet will be sent to the authors along with an uncorrected proof version. The authors are strongly encouraged to use the check-sheet. If the proofread results are not returned, the uncorrected proof will be used as the corrected proof version. If the author’s proofreading is returned too close to the deadline to meet publication in the targeted issue, publication of your manuscript may be postponed to the next issue.
In the unlikely event that a new error is found after the author proofreading before the publication of the final version, the author may request an additional correction for minor errors before publication. A handling fee of 5000 JPY (including tax) must be paid for additional revisions.
In the case of corrections due to errors made by the author after publication, the author will be required to submit a new manuscript for correction. Please note that APC will be charged for Correction.

Corrected proof manuscripts will be checked by the Editor Board before final publication. Column 14 summarizes the terminal dates for the publication of the respective issues. For example, for a manuscript to be published in issue 3, the ‘accepted manuscript’ must be sent to the publisher before March 10th, and the corrected proof must be sent to the publisher before March 31st. A manuscript submitted to a special issue will be published in a scheduled special issue. In cases where the review and revision process takes time and the deadline for the special issue cannot be met, the accepted manuscript will be published in a subsequent regular issue. However, the header of the manuscript will indicate that the manuscript was submitted to a special issue.
Manuscripts submitted to and Published papers in Electrochemistry after 2022 (volume 90) may be registered in the preprint servers or the authors' institutional repository based on the following policies:
Authors may voluntarily withdraw their submitted manuscript at any time before AOP for any reason attributable to the author, the Editorial Board, or a third party. When a manuscript is withdrawn, the author retains all copyright rights, and ECSJ waives all rights.
If for any reason you wish to withdraw your manuscript, for example, when an error is discovered after submission, the manuscript may be withdrawn through the Editorial Manager. You do not need to contact the Editorial Board or the Editorial Office.
Even if the manuscript has been accepted for publication, the Editorial Board may withdraw your manuscript before AOP under certain circumstances. Below are some cases where manuscript handling will be canceled and forcefully withdrawn from the system.
Retractions of published manuscripts (including Advanced Online Publication) may be considered in cases of evidence of unreliable data or findings, plagiarism, duplicate publication, and unethical research on request by the authors or by deliberation by the Editorial Board. However, the published manuscript cannot be withdrawn. Once a manuscript has been published, this fact cannot be invalidated even after retraction, and the original manuscript will not be deleted from the journal. A retracted article will be newly published, stating the reasons for the decision. The ECSJ will cover the publication fee for the retraction article regardless of the reason (ECSJ will own the copyright of the retraction article). Manuscript retraction will also be applied to the AOP. The ECSJ will not intervene with the handling of documents posted in institutional repositories or related sites of retracted manuscripts. Since the authors retain the copyrights to their manuscripts, it is the responsibility of the authors to handle documents posted in institutional repositories.
This English version of Instructions of Authors is considered to be a translated version of the original Japanese version.54 This document may be revised without notice due to changes in the regulations related to the publication of Electrochemistry, changes in the process of manuscript submission and publication, and internal/external societal changes.
