I have studied the histological changes of thyroid gland in 10 cases of tuberculosis which are preserved in autopsy room of our department. The material is fixed in 10 % formalin solution and the paraffin section stained Haernatoxylin-Eosin stain. The findings are briefly as follows :
1. In 4 cases of an early stage, not more than 2 months from the onset, the histological changes of thyroid gland showed shrinkage of follicles and many of them disappeared, the epithelium hypertrophied, congested blood vessels and scanty or absent colloidal content. Above mentioned picture proves conclusively hyperfunction of said.organ.
2. The histological changes of thyroid gland in chronic tuberculosis showed enlarged follicles with densely accumulated colloidal substance, the epithelial cells are flattened. In extremely advanced cases the connective tissure hypertrophied, and irregular sized withered follicles are found which means hypofunction of said organ. This.evidence is found in 6 cases whose durations were more than two months.
