I. Experimental study :
Three healthy adult female dogs were used in this experiment. Each of them was fed upon a fixed diet composed of rice,, lean beef and soy. 'I he urine was collected each day and diluted to a constant volume. The total nitrogen, urea, ammonia, creatinin, creatin, aceton and aceto-acetic acid were estimated by the usual methods. After the animalsobtained the nitrogenous equilibrium, the influence of administration of desiccated thyroid gland, quinin muriate, and quinin muriate with desiccated thyroid gland on these nitrogen component was examined.
The results were as follows : -
A) The effect of thyroid substance.
1) The output of total-nitrogen, the ammonia-and creatin-nitrogen is increased. The urea-nitrogen is decreased and the creatinin-nitrogen is not changed in the percentage to total-nitrogen.
2) The aceton and aceto-acetic acid excretion is slightly increased.
B) The effect of quinin muriate.
I) The output of total-nitrogen tends to diminution and the ammoniaand creatin-nitrogen are decreased. The urea-and creatinin-nitrogen are not changed in the percentile relation to total-nitrogen.
2) The aceton and aceto-acetic acid excretion is slightly increased. C) The effect of quinin muriate with desiccated thyroid gland.
I) The output of total-nitrogen is less increased than that in the case of thyroid feeding.
The urea-nitrogen is slightly increased in the percentage to totalnitrogen in the comparison with the case of thyroid feeding, the ammonia and creatin-nitrogen are decreased and the creatinin-nitrogen is not changed.
2) The aceton and aceto-acetic acid tend to be lower than that in the case of thyroid feeding.
From above mentioned data, it can be concluded that the thyroid hormon acts to increase nitrogen metabolism and that the quinin acts to reduce not only the nitrogen metabolism in normal state, but also to restrain the increase of the excretion of nitrogen (nitrogen component) and the output of aceton and aceto-acetic acid, which are produced by thyroid feeding.
II. Clinical study.
This experiment was carried out on one case of hyperthyroidism and two cases of Morbus Basedowii. They were given a fixed diet. The urine was collected each day and analysed. As soon as they were in nitrogen equilibrium, the influence of quinin muriate was observed.
The results were as follows :
I) The negative balance of nitrogen metabolism was observed in all of the three cases. The output of total-nitrogen and creatinnitrogen is remarkably increased, but the urea-, ammonia-and creatininnitrogen remain in the normal in the percentile relation to total-nitrogen. The excretion of the aceton and aceto-acetic acid are also the same as the normal case.
2) The quinin causes the diminution of the increased nitrogen metabolism in these patients. The output of total-nitrogen and the creatinin-, especially the creatin-nitrogen is definitely decreased, but there is found no change in the output of aceton and aceto-acetic acid.
