The skin functions not only as a“deck-organ”of the whole body, but performs various, complex physiological functions as an independent organ.
According to various conditions, its functions are either promoted or depressed, just as other organs do. In such a case, it is easy for us to imagine that a certain alteration will take place in the standing ingredients in the skin-tissue. In fact, S. Sotomatsu, a colleague in our department, has already verified that the amino-acids in the skin manifest a certain alteration in connection with the skin-function-
There are found several enzymes in the skin, but the significance of those enzymes are not yet fully known to us. S. Miwa, a member of our department, clarified the connection between the enzyme belonging to the oxidization-reduction and the skinfunction.
Of the hydrolitic enzymes in the skin, I selected lipase, diastase, and peptidase. After confirming their existence in the rabbit's skin, I tried many experiments to clarify the relation between the skin-function and these enzymes, as well as the manifestation-process of these alterating enzymes according to the skin-function. The results run as follows:
1) In the skin of a healthy, normal rabbit hydrolitic enzymes, namely, lipase, diastase, and peptidase, are found existing, and their normal values are found slightly different according to the regional difference.
2) When a moderate stimulus is given upon the skin, the functions of hydrolitic enzymes, not only upon the stimulated part of the skin, but upon the non-stimulated part of it, are promoted.
That is, when the skin-function increases, the functions of hydrolitic enzymes increase, too.
3) In case of hyper-stimulation acting upon the skin, the functions of hydrolitic enzymes on both the stimulated part and the non-stimulated part of the skin decrease, that is, along with the decrease of the skin-functions, the decrease of the functions of the enzymes is observed.
4) When the functions of hydrolitic enzymes in the skin are promoted by moderate stimuli given on the skin, the functions of the enzymes in the liver are promoted, too, in parallel with the former, while, on the other hand, those in the serum decrease conversely. By hyper-stimulation, however, alterating functions of the enzymes are entirely in the converse.
5) Alterating functions of the hydrolitic enzymes in the skin, serum, and liver by moderate stimuli are chiefly present in the healthy, normal rabbit's skin, due to the removing action of special, effective substances proliferated in the affected part of the skin by moderate stimuli. And tht manifestation of them is, it seems, an indirect one through the thyroid gland.
6) Alterating functions of the hydrolitic enzymes in the skin, serum, and liver by hyperstimulation are considered due to the functions of disturbing substances, newly produced in the skin, and direct, necessitating no presence of the spleen or thyroid gland.
