An analytical study of system errors in ground based 2 D area navigation and 3 D area navigation is reported.
The feature of the system errors variation in typical configurations of ground stations are analyzed and discussed.
The methods to estimate the error components of the bearing and distance in VOR/DME area navigation system errors are also illlustrated.
The summary flight test results are presented and discussed in relation to the system errors analysis.
The results of this paper are of operational value in the optimum selection of ground stations and the determination of the feasibility of existing ground stations to provide area navigation.
