Abstract

This report describes the principles and the ranging characteristics of the ranging equipment which uses the maximum posterior probability phase estimation technique.

The equipment is designed for surveillance in an aeronautical satellite system and has the advantage of a shorter range measurement time compared with that of a normal phase-lock loop type equipment.

The ranging characteristics were evaluated by the experiments using the multipath-simulator and a ranging error 70m was obtained under the condition of C/No 44 dB·Hz and S/I 9 dB.

The theoretical ranging error which was derived from the random time variant linear channel model of a satellite-aircraft link was quite close in the experimental one.

With regard to the bias ranging error, the analog integration error was dominant.

As a conclusion, we confirmed that this ranging equipment was usefull for surveillance in an aeronautical satellite system.
