A Model of Air Traffic Flow was developed by using discrete simulation language GPSS. The purpose of the study is to search adaptability of the simulation language for estimation of the traffic flow status for air traffic flow control.
Input data to the model is composed of flight time table, route structure, and runway operation parameters. The composition has flexibility depending on the traffic volume or the route structure. For all domestic airlines' flights in Japan, 68 airports, 6 airlines, 12 aircaft types, 1,240 flights, 99 fixes, 272 segments, and 330 routes counted based on one way are input.
It takes 20 minutes and 21 seconds for a 24 hour traffic simulation on the running condition of 4 MIPS main frame computer. The followings are obtained from the simulation; instantaneous traffic counts, queuing data on traffic on runways, and average waiting time for departure and arrival at specified airports.
Judging from the output data it is assumed that the model can be used as a tool for flow control.
