Abstract

Internet is the largest computer network interconnecting most part of the world. STA (Science Technology Agency) has begun a project of IMNet (Inter-Ministry computer Network). IMNet is used for study of computer network technology, communication protocol, data base, and so on. And it's connected with Internet. ENRI (Electronic Navigation Research Institute) has joined the project since 1994.

In this paper, I introduce a summary of equipment for connecting to IMNet and its employment.

Results of the employment are summarized as follows.

1. ENRI has closed network connection to JUNET with UUCP (Unix to Unix CoPy) and begun to connect to IMNet with TCP/IP (Transmisson Control Protocol/Inernet Protocol). SRI (Ship Research Institute) also has been connected.

2. I have set up a small network as “Firewall” and run proxy server on the Firewall.

3. Users in ENRI and SRI could use various Internet services such as e-mail (electronic mail), netnews, ftp (File Transfer Protocol), telnet and WWW (World Wide Web).

4. I examined traffic of e-mail and netnews. A statistic is showed that most e-mail traffic is from other parties in Japan.
