This paper reports trends in R&D of Airborne Separation Assistance System (ASAS). ASAS applications are expected to contribute to improvement in current Air Traffic Management (ATM) system and to smooth transition towards a future ATM system. ASAS R&D is being conducted globally. The way to apply ASAS is being discussed for an early implementation. The aim of this report is to provide state-of-the-art information concerning ASAS applications.
Firstly, the concept of ASAS is explained to ensure a common understanding. Secondly, ASAS Package 1 applications are described which have been discussed in the ASA (Airborne Separation Assistance) group during the ASAS-RFG (Requirements Focus Group) meeting. Major topics as In-Trail Procedure (ITP), Visual Separation Approach (VSA), and Sequencing and Merging (S&M), are presented based on trend survey at the ASAS-RFG meeting held on July 2007 and January 2008.
