Abstract
With the rapid spread of smartphones in recent years, accidents have occurred frequently on the platforms of stations. In Japan, amendments to road traffic laws have made texting while riding a bicycle illegal since 2008 and texting while driving illegal since 1999. However, many people disregard these laws in spite of increased awareness of the risk of such behavior. In this study, the gaze of a pedestrian texting while walking, that of a rider texting while riding a bicycle and that of a driver texting while driving have been measured. It was found that the gaze was concentrated on the screen while handling a smartphone and surrounding traffic conditions were not fully recognized, resulting in a very dangerous situation.
