Jaques-Dalcroze’s Exercices pratiques d’intonation is a solfège manual written approximately ten years prior to Les gammes et les tonalités, le phrasé et les nuances. This paper aims to clarify that the distinctive feature of his solfège method lies in enabling learners to listen, perceive, imagine, and internally grasp intervals for themselves. It also shows that the fundamental framework of his ideas had already taken shape in this early work and was carried over into Les gammes. The sense of tonality that Dalcroze sought to develop here goes beyond the key of a specific piece and extends to a wide range of relationships across all major keys. Through this method, learners are guided to focus not only on melodic continuity but also on the expressive dynamics of chords and harmony, thereby bringing the music they perform to life.
