A sample fiber is fastened passing through collodium solution; as the length of the fiber is extended at the immersion, it is dryed supporting in the original length. Cut the fiber in 1-2 cm.length, set the short fiber on the surface of a bakelite or glass cube-piece with collodium, and cut the-fiber parallel to another surface with a sharp knife. Observe the sectional form with the miscrscope and take the microphotograph by the horizontal point light. (Fig. 1.) This new method is beneficial, since the preparation is supplied in a short time, -of the sample fiber are necessary-only a few centimeter and it is possible to observe the dry condition-of the fiber. Expression of the section. The next two measurements are applied as the expression of the section of a fiber, since Full-Tiessdegree (A. Herzog, Textile Forsch., 1822, 3, 19) is not suitable to express the relation of the section and the fiber qualities. Surface ratio.-Ratio of the peripheral length and the sectional area or the peripheral length per unit area. Serration coefficient.-Ratio of the peripheral length and the circumference of a circle (radius r) having a similar area to the sectioh. It will be calculated from the microphotograph at any magnification. β=1 at α true circle, then β is always larger than 1. Relation of a and β Testing results of commercial viscose silk. The testing items are as follows: 1. Appearance. Classified into a, b, c, three orders from the observation. 2. Softness. Classified into a, b, c, three ordrs from the feeling with water washed samples. 3. Dyeing affinity. Direct dye “Chicago Blue 6B” is applied in 0.5% concentration and the affinity is classified into a, b, c, three orders from the colour shade. 4. Denier and filament number. 5. Strength and elongation. The testing apparatus is Dr. K. Hagihara's seligraph. 6. Quality number. The quality number is a multiplier of the strength per denier and the fiber, the number of natural silk is 60 (strength per denier is 3 g and elongation is 20% as-standard) and the number of viscose silk is a half of it as standard. 7. Section. Taken a microphotograph by the new method and calculated the value of a and 0. All records are shown with table. Viscose silk of superior qualities have a section of the round form with much serration and the serration coefficient is 1.50-1.59. Classification of Sectional forms. It is shown in Fig. 2.
