Lignin was recovered from the waste liquor from this cooking and dest-ructively distilled at a lower pressure. Soda lignin of bagasse reprecipitated from its solution of acetone or glacial acetic acid was a pale brown amorphous powder, whose melting point was 147_??_149°C. Soda lignin was soluble in Na-carbonate, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, aceton, and glacial acetic acid, but insoluble in ether, chloroform, benzine, and ether petroleum. From the qualitative reaction, the aliphatic and aromatic hydroxyr groups, the methoxyl group, and the carbonyl group were demonstrated. Soda lignin was destructively distilated by, direct fire, at 400°C, at an absolute pressure of 3cm of marcury, and we obtained 25.52% of oil dietllate, 13.9% of aqueous and 45.59% of residue. Oill distilate contained phenol, cresol, and xglenol etc., and the volume of this phenols corres-ponded to 16% of the lignin.
