It has been shown that the blotting papers of high absorbency can be made when we use pulps treated with conc. sodium hydroxide solutions. The absorbing velocity of the blotting papers thus obtained is about 40% higher, in average, than that of the papers made from untreated pulps.
Thus pulps can be transformed into “freer” states than their natural ones which is just opposite to beating.
