Instead of benzene, acetic acid was used as a diluent and acetylated with acetic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric or perchloric acid catalyst. Generally, in comparison to acetylation with benzene diluent, the rate of the reaction is low and damage to fibers great.
By the acetylation of yarns which have previously been impregnated with the catalyst, it is observed that the catalysts dissolves out into the acetylation bath gradually so that the acetylation rate slows down.
When free sulfuric acid is used, the reaction rate is high and fibers with 30_??_40 mole substitution may be easily obtained.
