Abstract

In order to consider dairy farming development in the context of Japanese dairy policy and market, it is important to approach the condition of dairy farm businesses. This study clarifies the changing roles of family and corporate elements in dairy farm businesses, based on differences between dairy farms in terms of herd size and diversification. For this purpose, we have classified dairy farms into four types on the basis of herd size and diversification. The research area for this study is the hilly and mountainous area of Shimane Prefecture where various dairy farm developments are seen.

The main results are as follows :

(1) The following process of family and corporate change is seen in the dairy farms of each type. The first phase is the change of the family element related to family-cycle. The second phase is expansion of herd size or diversification, and the third phase is generation of the corporate element.

(2) Family members take charge of top management in the dairy farms of each type.

(3) Change in the corporate element may affect change in management concepts, human resources management, and business structure.

(4) The corporate element has a good influence on the community contributions of dairy farms of each type.
