A Symbolic Radiolarian Species at the InterRad XV in Niigata 2017: Unuma echinatus Ichikawa and Yao

Unuma echinatus was adopted as a symbolic species at the InterRad XV in Niigata 2017. This letter introduces a procedure through which Unuma echinatus was selected as a logo for the InterRad XV. Morphological features of the species are described and their peculiarity is pointed out. In addition Unuma echinatus and its bearing on “Radiolarian Revolution”— a drastic change in our understanding of the tectonic evolution of the Japanese Islands is summarized.
