The writer examined the influence on the growth of mice of Lu-jung administered per os or through injections of its extracts.
1. When the writer gave 25—50% of Ln-jung per 10 gm. body weight mixed with feed for periods varying from three to four weeks, to groups of litters of mice at various. stages of growth, the increase in body weight was faster than in contrasting animals irrespective of their sex or age. The increase was proportional to the quantity of Lu-jung administered.
2. When he subcutaneously injected 0, 2 c.c. per 10 gm. or 0, 5 c.c. per 1.0 gm. of pure alcohol extract of Lu-jung into young litters of mice once a day continuously for four weeks, no noticeable increase was observed. However, when 0, 5 c.c. per 10 gm. was injected, the growth was slightly better than in the case of injections of 0, 2 c.c. per 10 gm.. The above fact shows that pure alcohol extract when continuously injected tends to promote the growth of mice.
3. Continuous injections of 0, 2 c.c. per 10 gm. or of 0, 5 c.c. per 10 gm. of physiological saline solution extract for the period of four weeks, did not exert any influence on the growth of mice.
4. From the above facts it can be concluded that although Lu-jung administered per os, produces a growth-promoting effect, its alcohol extract when repeatedly injected produces only a tendency to promote growth, while, physiological saline solution extract produces none.
