Our aim is to analyze the rhetorical structure of an online manual with Microsoft Office Word (called Word) automatically for extracting the important texts in it. The rules of rhetorical structure, which are generated from the feature of the texts in 25 titles with Word 2000 on the operation on character strings, are used to automatically obtain the rhetorical structure of the texts. We evaluated the precision of the rules by comparing the automatic analysis to the manual one. The three kinds of texts are used for evaluation: 1) the texts in 25 titles used for generating the rules, 2) the texts other than the texts for generating the rules, 3) the texts in 25 titles with Word 2007.
