Abstract

Onomatopoeia is thought to play a very important role in communicating about pain in Japanese. On the other hand, regarding onomatopoeia recognition, several examples were shown of differences depending on age groups. Therefore, Okuda (2022) and other researches have compared the recognition of onomatopoeia for pain in groups of different ages, such as young people and elderly people. However, it also seems important to consider recognitions that are common to people of various ages. Therefore, in this study, we conducted the following considerations. In the young, middle-aged, and elderly groups, the ratio of onomatopoeias that met certain criteria for 12 pain characteristics in each age group to onomatopoeias that met the same criteria in each age group was compared. The proportion of onomatopoeias that met the criteria for all three age groups was significantly higher in the elderly group than in the young and middle-aged groups. Methods for examining commonalities in cognition among the three age groups were discussed.
