This study discusses the fire safety of transition metals and compounds by comparing them with specific theories of elements and application examples. For a descriptive chemistry course on transition metals at the university, we solicited essays from undergraduate students on their favorite elements, their properties, and the students’ impressions of these elements regarding fire safety. The d- and f-block elements that generated the greatest interest were selected. The chemical properties and application examples of these elements are described. However, only a few essays were related to fire safety or fires. The connection between elemental chemistry and fire is explored by comparing safety data sheet components and the chemical properties of transition metals.
