Abstract
An 84-year-old woman was diagnosed as having gastric cancer and underwent a distal gastrectomy in 2006. Cancer of the gastric remnant was detected on endoscopy in 2008, and an endoscopic submucosal resection was performed. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was detected in tissues of both the primary cancer and the carcinoma of the gastric remnant with in situ hybridization for EBV-encoded small RNAs. EBV-associated gastric cancer is considered to be frequently observed in cancer of the gastric remnant. In the present case, both tumors were diagnosed as EBV-associated cancer, suggesting that early and careful postoperative detection is important for EBV-associated cancer.
