Abstract
A 73-years-old man developed severe watery diarrhea during the treatment of pleuritis with antibiotics. Computed tomography and rectosigmoid colonoscopy revealed a severe enhanced area and wall thickening in the small intestine and right-side colon. Stool culture revealed methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). We diagnosed severe MRSA enteritis and colitis, and administered vancomycin hydrochloride orally. In spite of the intensive therapy, repetitive massive intestinal bleeding and the state of disseminated intravascular coagulation could not be controlled. The patient died two months following hospitalization. With reference to the up-to-date literature, we reported on a grave case of MRSA enteritis and colitis, as a result of microbial substitution following treatment with administration of antibiotics.
