ADENOCARCINOMA OF THE ESOPHAGOGASTRIC JUNCTION ARISING IN A HYPERPLASTIC LESION

Abstract

We report a case of early adenocarcinoma with a hyperplastic lesion at the esophagogastric junction (EGJ). Endoscopy revealed a 20-mm diameter tumor at the EGJ. Upon examination of biopsy specimens, it appeared that one-third of the tumor was covered with normal mucosa. We diagnosed tumor invasion below the submucosa and performed total gastrectomy. Pathological findings revealed that one-third of the tumor was a hyperplastic lesion, which had been considered as submucosal invasion before resection, and suggested that early adenocarcinoma occurred from this hyperplastic lesion.
