A 64-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for further examination of a lesion in the descending colon that had been detected by positron emission tomography (PET). She had been suffering from papillary thyroid cancer. Colonoscopy showed multiple colon polyps (adenoma) and melanosis. Four months later, she came to our hospital again because of hematochezia. Colonoscopy showed erosion and a roughened mucosa with loss of the visible vascular pattern in the rectum. A biopsy specimen was obtained. Histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed cryptitis. The patient was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in the rectum. We present this rare case of ulcerative colitis with an interesting onset and course.
