SUCCESSFUL REMOVAL OF A FOREIGN BODY FROM THE ESOPHAGUS OF A CHILD USING A BALLOON CATHETER FOR EXTRACTION OF BILIARY STONES: A CASE REPORT

Abstract

A 2-year-3-month-old boy presented to our hospital with a chief complaint of ingestion of a coin. Endoscopic examination revealed a 100-yen coin in the esophageal orifice that was unable to be removed by a grasping forceps. A balloon catheter for extraction of biliary stones was threaded through the upper endoscope and passed distally to the coin. Then, after balloon inflation, both the catheter and endoscope were withdrawn from the esophagus, resulting in successful removal of the coin. To our knowledge, this is the first report of successful removal of an ingested foreign body using a balloon catheter for extraction of biliary stones under endoscopy. Accidental ingestion of a foreign body becoming lodged in the esophageal orifice is common, especially in children. As both positioning and inflation of the balloon are able to be confirmed directly under endoscopy, we believe that foreign body removal using a balloon catheter for extraction of biliary stones is one of the useful strategies for removal of ingested foreign bodies in children.
