A 54-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for treatment of an ileocecal mass which had been observed on abdominal ultrasonography by a local doctor. Colonoscopy revealed a 30 mm-sized, irregular, nodular, elevated lesion covered with debris in the cecum, and colon cancer was suspected. However, pathological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed no malignant findings in the epithelial cells, and amoebic trophozoites were observed. Therefore, the patient was diagnosed with amebic colitis. After treatment with metronidazole, these colonoscopic findings disappeared. It was considered that mass formation occurred as a result of amoebic trophozoites invading not only the upper layer of the mucosa but also a deeper layer. We report a case of ameboma mimicking colon cancer.
