Abstract

In the 5 years from January, 1979 to December, 1983, we performed 8717 gastrofiber-scopic examinations. We detected 507 gastric cancers during 2226 biopsies in 494 patients. Forty-five of the 494 patients had previously been diagnosed in other medical facilities before coming to our hospital. Four hundred and sixty-two malignant lesions were detected in our hospital. We divided these 462 lesions into three groups. In the first group the cancer was diagnosed by X-ray examination, in the second group by gastrof iberscopy and in the third group by histrogical findings of gastric biopsies. In the third group, the lesions had benign appearances under X-ray examination and endoscopy. Twenty patients of the last group underwent surgery, allowing us to evaluate their lesions histologically. In conclusion, gastric cancers with a benign appearance are characterized as follows : 1. Most of the gastric cancers with a benign appearance are small in size and shallow in depth of invasion. 2. In cases of large lesions, they were shallow in depth of invasion, and if the lesions are deeply invaded they were small in size. 3. There was a high incidence of lesions located on the lesser curvature. 4. The incidence of moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma was high, and the incidence of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma was low.
