Abstract

The patient was a 78-year-old female who was referred to our hospital duo to abdominal pain and symptoms of ileus. Abdominal CT and abdominal radiography suggested cecal volvulus. Since there was no severe complication or symptoms of peritonitis, endoscopic depression was selected first. Although insertion of the endoscope was difficult at the site of volvulus, the endoscope could be advanced by the use of a guide wire and an esophageal dilation balloon, resulting in successful depression. After operation, the symptoms were markedly alleviated, and the postoperative course was uneventful. An endoscopic procedure is effective for the treatment of cecal volvulus and is considered to be a useful alternative depending on the condition.
