Abstract
We investigated a linkage between climate change and marine ecosystem by generating records of sea surface temperature (SST) and sardine and anchovy abundances from marine cores retrieved at the Beppu Bay during the last 1500 years. Sea surface temperature varied in the Dark Age Cold Period and the Little Ice Age (LIA), while it was constantly high in the Medieval Warm Period (MWP). The burial fluxes of sardine and anchovy scales were low in the MWP. During the last 500 years, sardine scales were abundant in lower SST periods, while anchovy scales were abundant in higher SST periods. This relationship is the same as that observed today in the North Pacific.
