Speciation of Al in sediment-trap samples collected from the Bering Sea was made using 27Al-MAS NMR. Chemical leaching disclosed that more than 80% of Al was siliceous. The spectra of sediment-trap samples resembled that of the cultivated diatoms with Al ions being doped. This study implies the presence of biogenic Al in diatom frustules. Geochemical implication of the presence will be discussed.
