Abstract

Formation of Fe(II)-silicate minerals and Mg-silicate minerals at ambient temperature is important in discussions of low-temperature serpentinization or mineral precipitation in the ocean. In this study, minerals were synthesized in Fe(II)-Si-H₂O and Mg-Si-H₂O systems at room temperature and pressure under a nitrogen atmosphere. Fe(II) and Mg silicates formed in the experiments were identified as low-crystalline clay minerals. The experiments clarified solution conditions for formation of the silicate phases.
