Abstract

About 30 years ago, when I was a student, there were many laboratories in the Department of Chemistry that had signs for geochemistry and cosmochemistry, but now there seem to be only a handful of such laboratories in Japan. Geochemistry in Japan is a branch of earth and planetary science, and some may say that the role of geochemistry in chemistry is over. On the other hand, if we look at the United States, the Division of Geochemistry within the American Chemical Society is very active, and there is also a journal called Earth and Space Chemistry. Studies should not necessarily be categorized vertically, but it is possible that geochemistry will continue to be a frontier field of chemistry.
