Abstract
Long trails are starting to attract high attention in Japan in recent years as a form of coexistence between humankind and nature, and as a stage for spectacular walking trips. There are trails attracting visitors and developing sustainably, however others have serious situations. In order to clarify the requirements for the sustainable development of long trails in Japan, we conducted fundamental studies of trails, interviews with experts, and questionnaires on existing trails, from the perspectives of “trail users”, “volunteers”, and “donors”. It was suggested that it is important together with “maintenance and management”, “guarantee of safety” and “appropriate operation and management” moreover “theme” that is more universal, understandable, and relatable.
