Research laboratories related with the polymer chemistry in Kogakuin University have long history since the university was certified under the new school system in 1949. Many chemical engineers have been cultivated under the education and research with the school policy of “The Mind of Engineering”. The organic polymer synthesis and chemistry laboratory (Kobayashi Lab.) has been investigating the synthesis of elastic polymers by anionic polymerization of butadiene derivatives and hexamethylcyclotrioxane using a break-seal method under high vacuum condition, and polymer brushes by surface-initiated controlled radical polymerization to give an antifouling property. This article briefly introduced recent polymer synthesis achieved by using the vacuum line equipment in Kobayashi Lab. and handmade glassware bearing the breakable-seal ampules of chemical reagents for anionic polymerization.
