Abstract
The effect of the amount of ε-caprolactam and temperature on the graft polymerization of ε-caprolactam onto carboxylic polybutadiene rubber in the presence of phosphoric acid as the catalyst were investigated.
As a result, it was found that a linear dependence was observed between the amount of ε-caprolactam introduced into the mixture and the portion of it which combines with rubber, and that the physical properties seemed best with 40 to 50phr of ε-caprplactam.
Although this reaction was accelerated at the high temperature, the overheating of mixture showed a deleterious effect on its physical propeties. That might be caused by the excessive gellation of polymer. Moreover, the effect of the basic (HAF) and acidic (MPC) carbonblacks as a reinforcement on the mixture was investigated. It was observed that the former was superior to the latter in the physical properties.
