Abstract
For effective application of the sludge, which is formed by chemical treatment of waste plating bath and contains of chromium as the main component, the compounding effect of heat treated sludge on natural and synthetic rubbers was examined.
As a result of the compounding of sludge, the Mooney-viscosity of rubbers decreased very much in NR and IR. The tensile and adhesive properties of vulcanizates were considerably improved. In the cases of polar rubbers such as NBR and CR, the sludge acted as a vulcanization accelerator. The heat resistance of vulcanizates compounded with the sludge was not so inferior to the control. In moreover, CR could be vulcanized by the addition of sludge only without any usual sulfur, accelerators and metal oxides. Also it was found that the sludge had a filler effect on rubber like a common carbon black.
