The effects of novel hard segment on mechanical properties and morphology of p-phenylene diisocyanate(PPDI) based polyurethane elastomers (PUE) were studied. PUEs were prepared from PPDI, poly(hexamethylene carobanate)glycol, and chain extenders by the prepolymer technique. The chain extenders used were hydroquinonebis(β-hydroxyethyl)ether (HQEE), 2, 2′, 3, 3′-tetrachloro-4, 4′-diaminodiphenylmethane(TCDAM) as novel chemicals, and 1, 4-butane diol as a control. Swelling behavior, hardness, mechanical properties, thermal properties, WAXS, and FT-IR spectra were measured. Distribution of hard segment length was also measured. The maximum temperature which rubber elasticity hold is following order; BD-<HQEE-<TCDAM, while rubbery plateau modulus is following order; BD->HQEE->TCDAM-. The BD-PUE had higher phase separation than TCDAM- and HQEE-PUEs. Distribution of hard segment length in these PUEs was discussed.
