Abstract
The writer has investigated on the ground water and the types of the rural settlements at the southeastern foot of Mt. Haruna and try to. explain some of the characteristics of this region from the geographical point of view. The results may be summarized as follows;-
(1) The distribution of permanent habitation in this region may be explained in most cases in reference to surface features and to the depth of the water table of the place in question.
(2) On this slope the chief crop is mulberry. and therefore its culti-vation is one of the most i nportant sides of human activity, that in-fluence the structure of farm houses and the division of farm lands. (3) Various types of settlements are to be seen on this slope, but everywhere the particular type may. be considered to have been de-terinined principally by the method of land-utilization.
