Abstract
The object of this study is to make clear the development of floriculture in Hadano shi. Hadano-shi is one of the typical floriculture areas around Tôkyô.
The results of this study are as follows:
1. Greenhouse floriculture began in 1934 in Hadano-shi, and has rapidly developed since 1960.
2. This remarkable development has been made with the progress of urbanization by which the then flourishing tobacco cultivation has been changed to greenhouse floriculture.
3. Greenhouse floriculture here is characterized by the large scale management combined with paddy and dry field farming and specialization on carnation growing. The managerial structure resembles to the characteristics of a truck-farming region.
4. On the following points, however, the greenhouse floriculture in Hadano-shi may be characterized as market gardening.
(i) Low percentage of floriculturist out of all farmhouses.
(ii) Relative emphasis on real estate business such as management of rental houses, apartment houses or rental garages.
